"MORGAN" Silver Dollar Coin Ring

$150.00

The Morgan Silver Dollar ring is hands down my favorite ring. The Morgan Dollar was designed by Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan (1845-1925) and was minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. His design on these 100 year old coins makes an absolutely stunning ring. For these rings I only use AU (almost uncirculated) or BU (brilliant uncirculated) coins. With the high relief of these coins the lettering just pops when I acid etch the backgrounds. The are minted from 90% silver and 10% copper.

So, are coin rings legal?

Well, the United States code is as follows:

Ҥ331. Mutilation, diminution, and falsification of coins

Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States, or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States; or

Whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered, defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or lightened—"

The key word we need to examine is “fraudulently”.

Let’s define what that means.

Fraudulently according to the dictionary is:

adjective

  1. characterized by, involving, or proceeding from fraud, as actions, enterprise, methods, or gains: a fraudulent scheme to evade taxes. given to or using fraud, as a person; cheating; dishonest.

This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of a coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is, but you are not violating the law by simply cutting or reshaping it into jewelry.

So, YES coin rings are completely legal!

A ring made with the '“REVERSE” facing out has “ONE DOLLAR UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” along with some leaves and reeding close to the edge. A ring made this way is truly the most striking in my opinion, as there is more design and detail.

A ring using the “OBVERSE” of the coin facing out has the date and “E.PLURIBUS.UNUM” around the band along with stars. These are still a great looking ring.

WHEN ORDERING CHOOSE FROM THE PRE-MADE SIZES AVAILABLE in the drop-down list, or select “CUSTOM ORDER’ AND FILL OUT THE FORM WITH SIZE AND OBVERSE OUT, OR REVERSE OUT. Email me with any issues.

The process: After selecting the perfect coin, a hole is punched through the center. A nylon wedge is then pressed through that hole to form a cone shape. From there it’s annealed and then into another Swedish wrap jig to straighten out the sides. More annealing before oversizing using a ring sizing press. After the desired oversize is achieved the coin is once again re-annealed before pressing the edges over to form a flat or slightly domed top of the correct ring size. I then acid etch them and lightly sand off the high spots. Final polish is done with steel wool to give it a shiny yet rugged finish.

These rings can be formed in sizes ranging from a size 10 up to a size 16, including half sizes. When you order just let me know what size you would like me to make it and also obverse or reverse facing out. If you have any questions email me at: Timothystrinkets@yahoo.com

Most of these are custom made to order from my available inventory of coins. If there is one I currently show ZERO inventory, please email me and Ill work on making one for you. Also most coins, quarter sized or bigger, can be made into a beautiful ring. If you have a special coin or are looking for a unique coin please let me know and I can try to track one down for you.

(Legal disclaimer: You will be buying an item similar to the one shown. All measurements and weights are approximate. This ring is handcrafted and can vary from piece to piece. As each item is hand-worked, they can include minor flaws and imperfections. This is normal and I feel it truly adds to their charm. For shipping to countries outside the United States, it can take up to 4-6 weeks and all country specific taxes, and or duty, are not included.)
