How to clean and care for your Timothy’s Trinket

.999 Fine Silver

and

.925 Sterling Silver

All of my “FINE SILVER” items are made from pure .999 Silver. Because of that, I do not suggest using an ultra-sonic cleaner. These machines tend to create little snowflake looking blemishes on .999 that are extremely hard to remove without a polishing wheel. For the .925 “STERLING SILVER” jewelry you can use an ultrasonic, but for very short periods only.

What I suggest on both Sterling and Fine is using “Dawn” dish-soap and a soft bristle tooth brush. Apply a liberal amount of Dawn straight to the Jewelry, and then gently rub all the surfaces with the brush. Be careful not to apply too mush pressure. Remember .999 Silver is relatively soft, whereas .925 Silver can take a bit more pressure. Once thoroughly clean, pat pieces dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth. Next, use any standard Silver polishing cloth like the ones I sell here on my site. Rub the jewelry vigorously with the cloth until is obtains an even shine on all surfaces. Once your polishing cloth turns a blackish color, replace it. A dirty cloth can scratch your valuables.

Sterling silver is an alloy containing metals that react with chemicals found in air and produce tarnish; high moisture levels, exposure to sunlight and contaminants such as salt water increase this reaction. Take steps to protect your sterling and fine silver by keeping them in airtight packages. Also use tarnish-resistant products such as “Tarnish Tamer” strips sold on my site. These will absorb harmful chemicals found in the air. Keep your precious jewelry in a cool, dry place. Most tarnish is easily removed by hand polishing with a mild abrasive or soaking in an anti-tarnish solution. To keep your Trinkets shiny longer, I suggest to keep the jewelry in a dry, dark place. UV light is not your jewelry’s friend. Most of my items come wrapped in a small piece of treated tissue paper, this makes a good wrap for longer term storage.
